I have two Debian Woody stable (with bf24 kernel) systems on which sound did not work on the initial installation. The soundcore modules were installed and load automatically. By working out what my sound chip was, I was able to get sound working by doing a manual modprobe of the appropriate sound card module on both machines. (Sound also works by doing a manual insmod of the gameport module then the sound card module.)
On one of the machines, networking did not work on the initial installation. I got it working first manually with a modprobe and ifconfig, then automatically by adding the network card module to /etc/modules and editing the interfaces file. So I thought I would add the sound card module to etc/modules and it does load.
However, when I try to play a file with xmms, xmms just "locks" up and I have to kill it. It is not using cpu, it is not a zombie, it just does not respond in any way. I initially tried all this with the gnome mixer applet loaded (which works fine when the modules are loaded manually) but it still happens without it.
My conclusion is that I need to do something more to make the the modules load correctly on boot up. Does anyone know what this is?
