first simple question is gcc installed

gcc --version or whereis gcc

Im finding now that many distributions "wont" install gcc unless you select the "developer" packages during the install.

To some this may sound evil to many others this is a valid security concern.

Also if the install was an update often Im finding the new version of gcc hasn't been linked in the old links are still there.

Look in /usr/bin see if gcc is a link and make sure the link goes to the new version of gcc installed.

Hi All,

I'm trying ti install Xine under Redhat 9.0. I downloaded a Tar file
and unzipped it to my home directory.

I typed the ./configure command as instructed in the readme and the
process ends with

gcc .... no
cc .....no

valid complier not found please make sure that it is installed or that
the complier is in your path. I copied the file to /usr/lib and tried
and again. No joy.

I've never had this problem under previous linux versions. Still I
suppose I should learn how to put things in a users "Path" (whatever
that means).

Thanks all,

Mick
