Nup I'm not using mandrake kernel sources, using the stock ones from
www.kernel.org. Actually Damien Solley told me to download Con Kolivas'
supermount patch so I'll give that a try.

Supermount is a Mandrake specific patch. First thing to check is that
you're using Mandrake kernel sources. If you're using a "stock" kernel
then you won't be able to get supermount to work. The other thing that
has bitten me before is forgetting to run "depmod -a" after the
installation of the kernel. If you just want to get a newer kernel on
your system though, I find the easiest way to do that is to download the
RPMs of the latest kernel (2.4.22-10mdk or 2.6.0-0.test5.1mdk) from
cooker and install that.
