The underlying kernel of Mac OS X is Darwin. Darwin is a
a nice mix-in of Mach, BSD and the Apple IOKit for device
drivers.

This is different to the older Mac OS which didn't
even have memory protection iirc.

Well Darwin is open source, even if the Mac OS X libraries aren't,
so I guess it is valid :). To make it more valid I will say it would
be cool if someone ported the Mac OS X libraries to Linux.
