That's strange, it comes up by default just trying to initialise the modem
for me. From there I usually just type ATDT<phone_number>.
If what you're refering to is having it stop trying to initialise the
modem yes there's a command line option for that. man minicom.
Just FYI, I installed uucp which contains the package 'cu' and after minor
adjustments to /etc/uucp/port and /etc/uucp/sys you can do funky stuff
like create a user that has a shellscript as the command shell. In this
script you can call cu to connect to the serial device. Now you can ssh
into the machine as user com1 for example and it patches you through to
the serial device. I used this to allow an ISP to access the serial
console of an ADSL modem because they wouldn't believe there was some kind
of line fault. Now you could to the same with minicom but it relies on
them a) knowing minicom commands and b) not stuffing with the settings and
c) minicom terminal emulation being correct.
