this worked, complied easily, and worked a first time, and runs at nice=19.
it works for different mobos, though with this via chipset, hums through onboard sound.
another prob, when it runs from the command line, it hangs the console!
however, it will start as a cron reboot job. perfect!

I tried resetting pci registers, but didn't cool cpu, coz another register in Via south bridge had to be set, and couldn't find out how to do this from command line. This is explained in the fvcool docs.
