That sort of trick works perfectly for me. Remember it's the /etc/hosts
file of the thing doing the lookup so if you use a proxy server add it to
that or temporarily turn off proxy use and add to local machine. It works
because the browser (or proxy) sends the requested address to the web
server.
I frequently use this for newly delegated sites that don't have DNS yet
and also when testing replacement web servers for existing sites. Also
works fine for email - just remember to firewall off the other MX hosts at
your end.
