OK now from Peter Hardys explanation I can see the indirect dependence.

Reading up on nullmailer it says its for sending mail to a fixed list of 
mail relays. It says.....
"3. Into the file SYSCONFDIR/nullmailer/remotes, put one line for
     each of your relay hosts: HOSTNAME PROTOCOL

At present I have the Advanced Intrusion Detection Env running on the 
virtual host and its set at present to:
@@define MAILTO [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If I put on nullmailer and set the remotes to:
uts.edu.au smtp

Will it get to me?
I think I might be getting confused by the difference between a relay 
host and a mail host.
