Here's a possible solution for you. Add keybindings for the following key in
gconf-editor (Configuration Editor in your menus):

  /apps/metacity/window_keybindings/maximize_(horizontally|vertically)

That will let you do it via the keyboard.

If you want to change window managers (some people do, because they like the
infinite discombobulation of sawfish), just "killall metacity; sawfish &"
and save your session when you log out.
