I used to get lockups with my old scanner occasionally... well more than
occasionally to tell the truth. Think it's a race condition of some sort.
One thing to try is sortof like rebooting, unplug the scanner and unload
the USB modules, reload, plug back in. I realise this might not work if
the program maintains a lock on the module though.
In my case my scanner was SCSI and I was unloading/loading the scsi
module. Also... one day I just got the shits and read some emails after a
lockup and to my astonishment half an hour later the scanner sprung to
life!

OK this sounds like maybe it's a sane driver bug of some sort. Look for
updates and if none, maybe file a bug report?
