It is possible that the font in LaTeX doesn't implement the symbol, give it a bash
with the default font,
to see it the \symbol{"xx} notation is correct, as a first suggestion, then maybe try
\arial.

Sorry I haven't got much else, all my LaTeX font stuff was done by someone else.
