Sylpheed is a Mail User Agent. Exim etc are Mail Transport Agents.

For MTA, you might want to try lightweight stuff like nullmailer. Personally,
I find Postfix light enough to use on my laptop.

For MUA, Sylpheed is certainly pretty lightweight but if you prefer a text
interface, Mutt is a really good option.
