Thanks.

did you compile mplayer from source?

No - it was a Debian compiled version downloaded via apt

did you download the codecs you want? ie: qt, real audio, mediaplayer, etc

I realised I had omitted the Win32 ones - I had thought they may be for Win installs but
twigged they may be for MediaPlayer.

I downloaded and extracted them with the others into
/home/adam/.mplayer/codecs

I've downloaded all codecs I'm aware are necessary from both places
('all in one' and 'more binary codecs') on the mplayer home page.

I generally download all the codecs extract them to /usr/lib/win32
extract the source of mplayer
../configure --enable-gui --prefix=/usr (This is so I overwrite mplayer)
configure will come back telling me what codecs I will be allowed to play
then run make, make install
also LMLM4 is a codec

Since downloading the Win32 ones, I've tried again but still get the same message.

Where does one find the LMLM4 codec ?
