So, the parallel "dongle" is a copy-protection device or something, but
it talks to other boxes on the serial port?

If that is the case (that it needs to use both the parallel and serial
ports), I'd start by figuring out if it is the parallel or serial port
with the problem. Are you able to use qmodem or similar to communicate
with a modem or something from this dosbox session?

The most likely problem is permissions -- does it work if you run dosbox
as root?
