Penguinillas,
Eric Wilson wrote an article in yesterday's SHM synonymous with
the subject of this email.
<http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/05/17/1084646114631.html>
The article covered Linux and FOSS and the impact they are starting
to make on the desktop. Wilson knows of the impact our fave OS has
made in the server area, and seems keen to tell the world about the
beauties of deploying the Linux desktop in all its various guises to
the enterprise.
An interesting sidebar recounts Novell's move to dump Windows on
7000 work stns and replace it with Linux. They are mid-rollout
now.
The article concludes with a plea:
"Does the prospect of free software and better security
compel you to try open source? Is your company toying
with the idea?"
I have passed one lead on to Nathan Cochrane regarding my last
contract at Corporate Express (100% FOSS/Linux, very successful).
If any of you Sluggers have success stories in this area, perhaps
contracts involving desktop migrations, or perhaps something relevant
to where you work, Nathan would love to hear from you. If you
wish to contribute to his research for another article on the
matter he can be contacted at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
cheers
