Yeah, I guess that parallel ports don't support the kind of info yu can
get from USB.

Shouldn't as it gets the info from the raw device (hence the root
access) so bypasses CUPS altogether.

Generally, I find it's pretty easy to use.

You should check out foomatic and especially foomatic-gui.  It's really
easy and uses the linux-printing DB so you have access to the latest
FOSS printing information.

Mostly just plug and play as far as printers go :-)

Though at the moment I have a nice conflict with that and my winmodem
driver!
