> Some notes on the "Who wrote Linux" Kerfuffle > <http://www.cs.vu.nl/~ast/brown/> > by Andy Tanenbaum, 20 May 2004
Tanenbaum is indirectly responsible for the success of GNU also. RMS was looking around for a C compiler for GNU early 80s and came across Tanenbaum's "Free University Compiler" but was told the university was free the compiler wasn't and was motivated to write gcc. Linus was moticated to write Linux after Minix study. So without having any code in the project, Tanenbaum is partly responsible for the Linux success story. And his name probably means "Christmas Tree" in German. Stuart. Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo!
