The problem is that when I try to use the modem as an answering machine I can't hear anything. :-(
I have been using for a number of years (but *not* under *nix) several el cheapo externals called WebExcel. the 'original' WebExcels had beige metal case and Rockwell chipsets, the later one had plastic grey cases, the last lot I bough had silver case, *and' different chipsets.
The Rockell ones are rock solid for voice, fax, and data, and, I'd imagine would work with Linux the one I use identify themselves as:
ati 33600 ati3 V2.200-V34_ACF_DS1 ati4 33600bps Voice Modem For Australia ati6 RCV336DPFSP Rev 44BC
I never tried the non-Rockwell ones, as, I needed the same chipset across
all modems/lines, they may be just as good
