I have tried the a swann voice/fax/modem which says it's a rockwell modem.
but I am not sure if it's Rockwell 2,3,4, or 8.
The problem is that when I try to use the modem as an answering machine I can't hear anything. :-(

I have been using for a number of years (but *not* under *nix) several el
cheapo externals called WebExcel. the 'original' WebExcels had beige metal
case and Rockwell chipsets, the later one had plastic grey cases, the last
lot I bough had silver case, *and' different chipsets.

The Rockell ones are rock solid for voice, fax, and data, and, I'd imagine
would work with Linux
the one I use identify themselves as:

ati
33600
ati3
V2.200-V34_ACF_DS1
ati4
33600bps Voice Modem For Australia
ati6
RCV336DPFSP Rev 44BC

I never tried the non-Rockwell ones, as, I needed the same chipset across
all modems/lines, they may be just as good
