Yes, I use deb on the ibook too.... (still learning the "intricacies" of deb) I like the apps for the ibook in Mandrake club, makes some things easy.

/etc/nsswitch.conf. If the hosts: line doesn't have 'dns' in it, you'll get
the symptoms you've described, especially if you're getting this behaviour
across everything, old and new, in the system. The file is used by glibc;
if you've managed to compile glibc without DNS NSS support, you'll also get
the same sort of problems. You'll want to make sure that /lib/libnss_dns*
exists and has complete linkage.
