There's never a directory called "/var/cache/apt/archives/lock" -- it's
always a file as far as I can tell.

I tried your suggestion several times, as per the original mail and each
time aptitude failed to work:
> 2. Deleted every file named "lock" in /var (while aptitude was not

As best I can tell, the lock file in question in this case was
/usr/share/tasksel/debian-tasks.desc .
