Afer successfully installing Fedora Core 2 on a clean machine, I tried to build my own kernel as a prelude to customising it. I used the config file in /usr/src/linux-2.6.5/configs/kernel-2.6.5-i686.config, and made no changes except to set processor type to Pentium M (I have a Toshiba notebook). When I try to boot off this kernel, it dies very early:

Kernel panic: Atttempted to kill the idle task.
Code: 31 02 f4 40 31 02 00 00 00 00 00 10 00 00 00 00 00 00 0c 00

Machine is Toshiba Tecra 9000 laptop. On the default installed kernel, /proc/cpuinfo says
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 9
model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1400MHz

Any clues? I tried adding "idle=poll" to kernel params, but it made no difference.

Cheers
