Make help for the kernel?  I wasn't aware that it would in fact manage
the whole grub.conf stuff from the kernel packages.

It probably is - however, as someone who has some experience with LILO,
I too found it difficult to navigate around grub.  It found it so
frustrating to just build a new kernel under SUSE I ended up moving back
to Debian.
