I've been running Debian (now running Suse 9.1 Pro) on a Dell Latitude CPxJ.
It's about 4 years old now, so most of the gear in it is probably
considered "legacy" by now! ;) Still, it's performed well for a P3-650
with 256Mb RAM (much better than the Win2K my employer installed
originally!).
I know a number of people at the university where I study who have purchased
newer Dell's and are hapilly running Debian or Fedora on them. Like most
lappies these days, the Centrino WiFi is a bit of a headache (but getting
better) and the Video configuration on the wide-screen versions seems a
little difficult to nut out properly. FWIW, the Fedora users seemed to
have fewer difficulties than the Debian users, but once things were
up-and-running, the Debian users are happier :P Go figure.
Good luck and have fun!
