What's preferable, cable or ADSL?
Given cable, Telstra or Optus?

Cable is faster if you are in the area for it. I would definitely use Optus Cable, you get 12G of downloads before you get traffic shaped on the standard plan, and it's very very fast. Bigpond cable is not so good, you get uploads as well as downloads counted against your limit, plus the connection client on Linux is somewhat quirky. For Optus Cable you just need a dhcp client to connect.

Then again there are some good ADSL deals going around at the moment.
I have clients on TPG and Swiftel ADSL doing quite well with Linux
machines. Shop about after seeing what's in your area.
