Don't ditch Exchange. That's basically the only sane answer. You can try things like SuSE OpenExchange (recently open sourced by their upstream), OpenGroupware.org and so on, but they're all somewhat suboptimal. If you can live without a FOSS solution, you can try Samsung Contact (previously HP OpenMail) or Novell's Groupwise. Don't ditch Exchange. In fact, some good Exchange training will get you much further than the current crop of FOSS alternatives. And if you stick with Exchange, use 2000 or 2003.
