On booting up a Debian Sid box sometimes the Wings Display Manager
starts on VT4 instead of VT7. Messages are sent to VT1 indicating that
the getty is respawning too fast on VT4 and will stop trying for 5
minutes or words to that effect.

I imagine that this problem is caused by some kind of a race. ie the
display manager starts before the gettys have started on the first 6
ttys. Has anyone else seen this or know what causes it? As I don't need
all the VTs I have commented out the lines that start VTs 2 to 6 in the
inittab which bypasses the problem but would like to know the cause.

The second problem is that sometimes some fonts disappear. For example
on login the menus in icewm will display the small icons but the
accompanying text will be missing or in an application there will be no
text on the toolbar only icons. The problem can be fixed by logging out
then logging into VT1 as root and doing:
/etc/init.d/wdm stop
/etc/init.d/wdm start

Has anyone seen this before or know where I should look for clues?

cheers,

Ken
