Unfortunately, gconf is pretty modern and tightly honed. The problem you're
having is almost 100% due to GNOME's session support, which is very old and
shitty. We need to fix it.

Open up Applications > Desktop Preferences > Advanced > Sessions, go to the
Current Session tab. Now, I can't give you a reasonable summary of the kind
of things that shouldn't be there, but if you note down the process names in
a reply, I can tell you which ones to remove (and why they're broken).
