If you want a USB modem, I highly recommend the Mitsubishi Diamond Voice 56UE Fax Modem (to give its full name). It's tiny, totally bus-powered and works nicely. I discovered, while hunting for a modem for my serial-port-less laptop, that it's often useful to ask whether the modem is Mac-compatible. No idea whether this has changed with MacOS X, but I gather Macs don't play well with Winmodems either, so anything that works for a Mac _must_ be fully hardware and will thus also play nicely with Linux. A handy way to avoid the knee-jerk "we don't support Linux" reaction.
