I always thought you could just use a standard 25-9 cable if you only
wanted one port...
Correct. 2, 3 & 7 are wired as per normal rs232. The second and third serial ports are wired to other pins (sorry don't know which ones) and the splitter just wires them back to 2, 3 & 7.
