I used to use software suspend and for a while there it worked quite
well. Unfortunately since then I broke something and I haven't had time
to figure out what.

If you want to use swsusp, I strongly recommend pulling down the
mandrake kernels since they ship with swsusp built into them. There's
also a bunch of nifty scripts in a package called suspend-scripts. I
don't know if that's mandrake specific or not, but look into them
because they make life easier.
