Try 

auto_view text/plain

in .muttrc.

Alternatively, I like to do something like add

text/html; lynx -force_html -dump %s; copiousoutput

to .mailcap, and set 

auto_view text/html

in .muttrc and you can get a pretty good view of what's happening in
the html mail.
