Thanks John, that tipped me off and I've got it working now.
For the archives, My install of Fedora Core 2 uses gdm to start X from inittab so editing startx won't do it. Instead edit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf and uncomment the line saying #DisallowTCP=true and make it
DisallowTCP=false

of course you'd then ensure that your firewall only allowed connections to tcp 6000 from trusted hosts ;-)
