In one of the the issues PHP Architect (I think December 2003 or so) there is a very simple way to parse PDF files and write them using standard IO. I had begun porting the functions to perl, but then I gave back the magazine to the owner and never finished it. I would recommend it as a very nice starting point for an editor.
