register? You mean have them act as nameserver? AFAIK, your nameserver can
be anybody you like who is willing to do it for you, provided that your
domain registration (delegation) points to the correct nameserver(s).

I run my own mailserver/DNS and I simply indicate who is authorative for
my domains, which is mostly me. I still have some domains for which
networksolutions are authorative.. that is, they are the name servers of
record indicated by the delegation of that particular domain.
