That sounds interesting.
With Knoppix, how does one save basic config info in hard drive?

The distro gives you te option to place a config file on the HDD if you do any configuration.

Also is it possible to configure the internet connection to run via Knoppix?

Yes. Set it up using the Internet config tool provided with Knoppix.

And, how does one enable deletion of or writing to windows files when
necessary through Linux?

Depends upon your security. If you Windows is not nt based just mount the directory. If it is then you can still mount the drive, but have to provide a password and username acceptable to nt.

I have some programs and internet sites that seem to have piggybacked onto
my system that are impossible to delete, even with the MSDOS prompt.

Probably adware or similar. Google for free adware and spyware removers. eg Adaware, Spyblaster and "Spybot search and destroy" are useful. My daughter uses these three and between them she seems to get rid of everything.

Hope that helps.
Stay well and happy

PS You know that you can install Knoppix on your HDD if you want don't you. Check their site.
