I'm thinking of having my users switch exclusively to using Squirrelmail.
There are not a lot of users (about 20) or mail (500/day) , but at least
one of the users has a habit of allowing her inbox to run up to thousands
of messages without clearing it (currently just over 6000 messages!).

She also has a problem with spam - she gets up to 200 a day, currently
filtered reasonably well with bogofilter.

Does anyone have an opinion about the viability/reliability of
squirrelmail in this situation? I'm building a complete new server and the
set up I have provisionally is Dovecot imap and Postfix, but I can change
it easily at this stage.

While I'm on the subject, there are some utilities around to change from
mbox to Maildir. Are there any opinions about which work better? or traps
for the unwary?

I was using it previously with only 1 or 2 users backed by courier-imap using maildir at the time. Mail was filtered using procmail and as such one of the mailboxs got rather large (a couple of thousand msgs or so) This was probably a few versions of squirrelmail ago but the only hassle that I ever had was her not being able to open the mailbox when it got too large. Simply moving the mail to another "archive" mailbox fixed the problem. Other than that it was rock solid.

Having said that this was being run on debian stable and IIRC I wasn't using backports until later so the problem may have been fixed since then.

Overall I'd recommend it.
