Others have sorted out your syntax so I won't mention that except to say that line would never have worked; it must be a typo in the book that you copy'n'pasted from.
Bookshelves and the net abound with out of date C++ reference and tutorial material. It's a pity because the right text is especially important with C++. I cannot recommend 'Accelerated C++' by Koenig and Moo highly enough. You can get their source code at acceleratedcpp.com. You might want to d/l Stroustrup's 'Learning C++' pdf too. Accu.org have good book reviews; not only of C and C++.
