For me, an odd problem developed this week under kernel 2.4.23. Suddenly, my network would lock up - e.g. even attempting to run ifconfig would lock; running it via strace showed it lock up inside an ioctl. In fact it locked up so badly that the system would hang during reboot (while trying to shut down ethernet).
The network was fine if I booted up even older kernels, but they couldn't see my extra disc drives, so I felt it was time to upgrade the kernel. Happily, 2.4.28 sorted these problems out. I have *no* idea why the problem started, though. luke -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
