Yes it is. It's my account which I'm logged in to right now and which I've been using successfully on this same machine with samba for several years. I can telnet to localhost and login with the same username and password which samba doesn't like.
The username/password combination you are using in 'taipan', obviously, is a VALID combination.
It's exactly the same username and password.

Are you able to show us the
[GLOBAL]
section of your /etc/samba/smb.conf ?
