Hey folks,

Here's my personal notes from the meeting we had at SLUG tonight about
the community code project (that is, the project we're setting up to
help Newstart recipients do mutual obligation work for Free Software,
and to help others get involved in Free Software).

Matthew Palmer is setting up a mailing list etc sometime tomorrow on
communitycode.org -- this discussion will move there from then on.

In terms of concrete things we need to do, Matt has done a lot already:

 1. finding out the details of registration with Centrelink and
associated requirements

 2. setting up domain and mailing list

Here are the kinds of things we'll be hoping to nut out fairly quickly
on the mailing list. I've put [*] next to the kind of things that
someone will have volunteer to get done -- remember that none of this
stuff will happen by magic :)

If you'd like to volunteer to help produce or do any of this, the first
step is going to be subscribing to the communitycode.org list when it is
set up.

We need:

 1. a clear goal statement

 2. what will be the relationship between Free Software groups who want
helpers and our organisation?
    - Jeff pointed out that it can be difficult to find entry-level Free
Software tasks for people -- it will likely be that the project
will need volunteers from somewhere who are good at matching
people to tasks and who know a project's needs [*]

 3. work out who's providing our insurance and stuff, and what our
relationship with them would be
    - Pia pointed out that whatever organisation it is will need to
provide a statement to their insurer saying that they want the
policy to cover people doing X activity [*]
    - if it's a for-profit group they need to set up a non-profit for
      this [*]

 4. figure out how to hold MO people accountable
    - what kind of documentation of their work is required? [*]
    - what infrastructure do we need to set up, can we borrow eg Open
      Skill's infrastructure? [*]
    - we may need to figure out when we can no longer work with a
      volunteer [*]

 5. staying in NSW?
    - is the project staying in NSW or the Sydney area? well, at present
we have no volunteers anywhere else, but there's no problem with
      it in principle

 6. What are people without computers at home going to do?
    - they could work at ComputerBank locations [*]

Here's some other things that arose:

 1. We need people to spread the word a bit, particularly to people on
Newstart who'd be interested in working with the project in its
infancy, but also to people who would like to work on Free Software
under a mentoring system that would match them with tasks and anyone who
would want to be involved in setting it all up!

 2. We will need to do regular reporting to maintain enthusiasm

 3. One thing that our volunteers could do would be training other
    people .
