My best recollection is that the disc isn't readable until finalisation,
because the table of contents gets written when the thing is finished off,
but I may have been using the wrong options to cdrecord. It's been a while
since I've bothered with multi-sessioning -- I just use another disc if it's
needed.

Modern HDDs aren't too picky about their handling, and remember that CDs can
be damaged by rough handling too.

I've had this problem. It sucks very, very hard. To the point where any
time I have to specify a tape backup solution, the quote includes the cost
of an extra tape drive and secure off-site storage for it.
