Thanks very much for that Edwin, but these guys are already using Eudora (which doesn't work on this machine, but does on others) and I tried Thunderbird (which gave the same problem). There is one OE client on the network I have yet to set up (the horror...)
I'm really inclined to think it's an issue with this specific box. You'd think the problem would be more widely reported if it was systematic.
