IIRC, GSX is Linux with custom kernel modules but ESX is it's own kernel. I think it was based on FreeBSD way back when they founded VMWare.. no idea if they pull things from the FreeBSD of today.
I havn't worked there since 2001 and my memory is a bit foggy :)
