Reaching back into the dark crevices of my mind, I think I recall some incompatibility problem between SSH 2 and puTTY. If you deep dive the SLUG archives you might find something a few years back, or try googling.

Hi Sluggers,

I'm having a problem with my server where I can't connect to it over
ssh. I can establish a connection, but when I enter a username, it
throws me out. I've tried both with root and regular users, but to no
avail. I can log in using a tty so I think PAM is okay.

I've set the logging to DEBUG3, so hopefully someone can shed some
light on where I've messed up. It's reasonably large so I've attached
it. Hope thats the right thing to do.

Thanks,

Rob.
