Coupla thoughts on this thread: 1. You can probably build proftpd without ssl anyway. Are you sure you need it? (hint: you probably don't)
Try something like --without ssl or --without openssl in the configure run. 2. Install (fedora3/rhel4) from scratch on another box and and move apps one by one; substitute when you're happy.
