Hi
An addendum:
$ gunzip -l --verbose admin.tar.gz method crc date time compressed uncompressed ratio uncompressed_name
defla 74d2071b Apr 16 16:09 932087 1259520 26.0% admin.tar
so I now have some further info at least. Will that help ?
Im wondering if the CRC check is failing.

I'm getting errors trying to gunzip some files of xray diffration data.
I'm unzipping on a Linux box. The data was gziped on an SGI IRIX, stored on a Novel server,
moved over to a Windows box and eventually to my Linux box.
