This means you can't directly access the sound card but have to go through the sound server. In preferences, see what XMMS is using. If it's going direct (to OSS or ALSA), then the reason Amarok isn't working is that artsd isn't running. One of the KDE control panels controls the sound server. Check that out. You'll need to set non-KDE apps up to use artsd.
