1. Can the modem run a self test on the connection between
   it and optus, I have a DSL-504 and on the web interface
   there is a self test that checks line quality, ppp and
   ping. See if you have something similar or report back
   on what type of modem you are using.

2. Is the machine physically connected to the network?
3. Can the machine ping the modem.
4. Can the machine ping mail.optusnet.com.au

I suspect one of the above will fail. If they all pass then
Optus suck because they will not help you diagnose the problem
when you are running Linux.

If it comes to Optus diagnosis, I have heard from a friend of a
friend of a friend that you can just tell the help desk that
you are using windows, as long as you know the equivalent Linux
answers to their questions.
