I believe they emailed every bigpond customer about it.  I support a
remote bigpond user and he told me about it a month in advance, because
he received an email telling him it was happening.

Of course it's possible, you just have to relay via their servers.  Or
setup a relay elsewhere on a port which isn't blocked (or via a vpn).

It is a bit, but it has reduced the number of spam attempts I get from
bigpond dynamic IPs, so it's not all bad.  It'd be even better if their
mail relays weren't so unreliable -- outgoing mail is sometimes held for
hours or even days for no apparent reason.
