I had no idea how to rebuild any debian/ubuntu packages from source, but
I figured out a way:
1. Download nedit-5.5-1 sources from Internode's Ubuntu mirror
(nedit_5.5.orig.tar.gz and nedit_5.5-1.diff.gz).
2. Unpack source, apply patch.
3. Run "debuild -uc -us".
4. Install package :-)
It didn't help though; the new package has the same problems as 5.4, and
both are almost unusable. None of the problems occur with the 5.5 binary
from nedit.org on my old RH7.3 box[0].
The most obvious difference is the motif library: ubuntu uses lesstif,
nedit.org uses openmotif, so that's the next thing I'm going to try.
I've found a copy/paste bug report on sourceforge which, although not
exactly the problem I have, is similar enough for me to suspect a bug in
lesstif (and ubuntu's nedit patch disables the warning about building
with an untested version of lesstif).
Thanks for the build instructions, I'll file them away for future
reference. While we're on the subject of building packages, do you know
where I can find a quick guide to creating a package from my own source?
Cheers,
John
[0] I've tried the same binary on hoary but it reports "locale not
supported" and crashes easily.
